Dog Time?

There comes a point in your life when you feel you're ready for the next big thing. You get married, you figure your life out a little bit, then... what next? Babies? Not yet. But working from a home office, the house seems awfully quiet and in need of some life during the day. I've been begging my husband Tylor for a dog for a few weeks now. It just seems like the next step – and a good one at that. Having a fuzzy bundle to accompany me on walks would be a joy. Having another life in the house would be awesome, and yes, I would probably talk to the dog like a human... don't judge me.

Dog owners, is it worth the expense, poop pick-up, time, hassle, and chewed shoes?

You have to agree, our family does look more complete with that fuzzy pup by our side... right? If you have reason to talk me out of this fantasy... do it now :)

Cat people unite! Get a furry kitty... then you can leave town for the weekend and not worry about it... unless it runs away. That's always a little sad, but the sadness doesn't last long. Whereas a dog is so much more hassle, and they stink. Clearly, I'm a cat person. But I think you guys would be amazing pet parents no matter what you get! Good luck.

Dogs need a yard and attention. They wreck the grass of said yard. We had a dog in a rental for a while - not good. Just fixing the landlords grass when leaving sucks. A big commitment, not really related to having kids. Two separate things. Kenneling a dog is $40/day, so vacations have a multiplier. Getting a (big) dog is an astronomical life changer. But the cuddles are good.

Get a dog!

It is seriously wonderful. Yes they are a lot of work at first, however; they make you go for walks when you wouldn't, are ALWAYS happy to see you and will bring you so much laughter.

Fun! Do a lot of research! Research breeds & read some Ceasar Milan books. ;) We could do swapsies for dog care when you go on vacation or we do!

You should meet our dog--she's awesome!

To dog or not to dog? My thoughts: dog.
I was never a dog person. Didn't grow up with one. Thought they were cute, but a bit smelly and slobbery for my liking.
Then I met Annie. A little over three years ago I brought her home reluctantly, not sure about the whole thing. But I tell you this girl stole my whole heart. I felt a very real empathy for all my dog-loving friends. I just finally 'got it'. Dogs are really great.
Annie doesn't know it, but she has been responsible for some real personal growth for me. Not only did I learn I could keep something alive and cared for, she helped me become a more forgiving, patient and compassionate human. She makes me laugh right from my belly on even my worst days. She has been such a joy to get to know. I feel so lucky to have her little (weinery) soul to travel beside, for however long we might have.
Living in a small community full of dog owners, I have never had to kennel her. We all trade up and take each others pups when we go away, and I know she's well cared for where she stays. This helps a lot.
This being said, it's a commitment and there are some costs. But it's really not too bad (at least with a short-hair mini dachshund).
On a scale of joy to "Annie peed on the bed", the joy far outweighs. Any time she does something "not cool" it's usually our own darn fault anyway (another growth area for me).
Yours truly,

Thanks everyone – I think the good far outweighs the bad. Here's to convincing the husband!

You most definitely should get a dog, provided it is large and you take endless photos to share with me!
