Tirzah (Tirz) Pfister is a really, really good baker. She lives for it, and you can taste it. She is bringing her passion to life by launching Tirz Bakeshop. Tirzah puts a special touch into every part of her baking – quality ingredients, melt-in-your-mouth taste and exquisite presentation. Tirzah lives in Zurich, Switzerland and we were so happy to be able to work with her while she was visiting Canada. Tirz has an eye for beautiful aesthetics – beyond her sweet creations – which makes her a delight to work with. We explored quite a few different avenues for the Tirz Bakeshop logo brand. It had to be timeless, legible and appeal to a wide range of age groups. Hand lettering was a must, and we decided on a custom hand lettered slab-serif – friendly and not too trendy. We look forward to seeing how her packaging turns out – gold foiling! Yes! From the sketch book... A secondary graphic was created to use as a sub-logo within the brand. We produced a rubber stamp for packaging to give that real made-from-scratch feel. Rubber stamps are... awesome. Keep up with Tirzah on instagram ( tirzahpfister) to drool over her baked goods!

I worked on a few updates for City Chapel today and thought I should share. I have been so fortunate to work with the lovely folks at City Chapel to develop branding and identity, website design and some other graphics for them. City Chapel is a small (but growing) church in the heart of downtown Red Deer. The are lead by a team of great people who desire to engage in their surrounding culture. The Logo The City Chapel logo is sleek modern and timeless. When beginning sketches, the goal was to involve meaning, without looking stuffy or typical. The mark displays a gathering, or community. It also represents the two C's from City Chapel. The rings of the C's also have twelve sections, representing the twelve disciples – discipleship being a core value of the church. A bold sans-serif typeface was selected for the text to appear strong and current. A bright palette was chosen to get noticed, and display the vibrancy of the church community. The Website The team at Redpoint Design helped bring this website to life – you can check it out at www.citychapel.ca We created big colourful slides for the website outlining the church's main convictions. As a family journeying in faith together, we agree and share that the focus of our ministry is to glorify God through the fulfillment of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) in the spirit of the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:37–39) because of the Great Exchange (2 Corinthians 5:21). This is fulfilled as disciples of Jesus Christ are made. God is glorified as we manifest His presence in doing so (2 Timothy 2:2; 1 Corinthians 10:31). An image for The Gospel of John was created to highlight a series that was going to carry on for over a year.
I doodle – a lot. I go through ridiculous amounts of black felt pens and coiled sketch books. I love the way ink looks on paper, and how the curls of an uppercase "K" can go so many different ways. I am a believer in the lost art of hand-lettering. I just love it. Sometimes I doodle strange things, and the odd time it makes sense. I've learned so much in the last few years. Tylor (my husband) and I strive to Live Simply – think more about what we're purchasing and where it comes from, Eat Well – think more about what our bodies need and where our food comes from, and Be Kind – that's kind of a given, even though it can be tough sometimes :) Spice up your computer desktop with this little number – download right here.
What inspires you?
I get asked this question a lot. I also ask myself this question every day. Designers are inspired in many different ways. I think that is just part of being (dare I say it...) a "creative." I am inspired by my surroundings, by where I am at in life and who I consider to be the great designers of our time. The great thing about it is, your brain gets to run wild until you reach a point where you have to gather your thoughts into something that you can represent visually. Bringing your lifestyle into your work offers something that nobody can really replicate. Tonight, I was watching these two robins out my window on the fence. They looked as if they were having a deep conversation, so I rolled with it. Why not? Be current. The internet has so much to offer. An afternoon spent browsing beautiful print design on the web will only do you good. Follow design blogs, read magazines. Soak up design work that you find attractive. Stop using the same two typefaces over and over, and experiment. Your style will be reflected even if you are current (hopefully...). Nobody wants to pay for design work that was trendy 10 years ago. Keep up. Be free. I've been fortunate to have had a lot of creative freedom in my career so far – working alongside others who valued the creative process enough to acknowledge that the best work doesn't always come between 9 am and 5 pm. This is one work value that I hold very high. Think of Mad Men's Don Draper. Would he be as brilliant creatively if he was restrained? Imagine the quality of his work if he was asked to pump out creative copy 8 hours a day from a cubicle. Not good. Some of my best ideas will come on a day when I'm not supposed to be working. The idea could have been triggered by finally getting out of the office and sitting at the beach. Answering emails, writing quotes and having client conversations aren't overly inspirational, even though they are part of the job. You need to move from your desk. Even if this means taking a stroll at lunch or walking to a cafe to finish those last few quotes. Go places, soak up culture, eat different food and experience the great things around you. This will be reflected in your work. Back to the robins. What do you get when you kiss a diseased bird? Cherpies. I had so much fun creating a greeting card set for Christie recently. She is a girl who loves writing, all things vintage, and emerald green. I illustrated two cards for her, resulting in two versatile designs that are simple, fun, and very "Christie."
If you would like to learn more about this lady, pay a visit to her witty and insightful blog at christiethinks.wordpress.com When is the last time you took the time to write someone a note? We constantly drop emails and facebook messages, but it is sometimes nice (or more appropriate) to pick up a pen and write a message by hand. Try it. I bet the person on the other end of the mailbox will be delighted! Fridays are the best work days of the week. Am I right? To make them even sweeter, I am going to start creating something extra fancy and post it every friday. A little something to kick-off your weekend with something colourful and happy. In celebration of this beautiful province and the soon-to-be summer berry season, I've created a strawberry image and pattern today. Enjoy! Download the strawberry pattern by Kayla English for your computer desktop – here. Happy Friday!
Yesterday was a good day. We had our very first exhibit at the Chamber's Fraser Valley Business Showcase. All complete with a hand-crafted display, snazzy name-tags, give-aways, and a raffle for $500 creative dollars. We were able to meet new faces, talk with other business owners, and introduce Kayla English Creative to the area for the first time. It was so great to hear feedback on what we're doing, and make some awesome connections in this new (to us) community.
To the lovely design students Lorenza and Oliva from the UFV, it was such a delight to meet you and chat about your aspirations and interest in design and visual communications. I'm hoping we can connect soon! We'll be announcing the winner of the raffle later tonight – stay tuned via Facebook, and remember to "like" our page! You can even click right here. I'll make it easy for you :) Wednesday April 10 we will be exhibiting at the Fraser Valley Chambers of Commerce Business Showcase. We're pretty excited! – kayla + tylor Mother's Day is Sunday May, 12 this year. That is coming quickly. If you are like me, you often forget this day until it sneaks up in your calendar and you see it the day before. I end up scrambling, and feel like what I give is not as good as it could have been if I had planned. This year, I'm on it. Something creative, useful, unique and pretty. Something not too expensive, and something my mom will likely keep for years. I'm designing her an address stamp, and this is why your mom probably needs one too. (Hopefully you aren't reading this mom...)
